The cast of the Harbor Springs High School musical — High School Musical. HARBOR SPRINGS — For the first time since 2019 the Harbor Springs Performing Arts Center will be bringing students back to the stage this weekend for the Harbor Springs Public Schools spring musical. The musical — Disneys High School Musical — follows the story of Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez as they try out for the lead parts in their high school musical. This causes division among their peer groups and cliques but the two move forward deciding not to stick to the status quo.
Its largely based off the film but does have a few changes for the stage said Harbor Springs High School language arts teacher and musical director Kendra Shaw. Anyone who is familiar with the movies will hear a lot of the same songs as well as a few others she said. The musicals cast and crew consists of 29 middle and high school students who have all been working on the musical since the middle of February. Its both Shaws first time directing and the first time students have been able to rehearse and be on the stage together in about three years — due to the COVID-19 pandemic — but Shaw is eager for people to see the show.
Its been really really exciting actually in directing the show. Its been a learning curve for myself and the kids but we have all gotten into the swing of things quickly and are really excited to be back to live performances on the stage she said. The upcoming musical will take place in the Harbor Springs Performing Arts Center with one showing at 7 p.m. on Saturday April 30 and a second at 3 p.m. on Sunday May 1.
Tickets for the musical will be available at the door and are $10 per adult and $7 per student. The centers box office will also open 45 minutes prior to the shows. Ive been able to watch all of this come together and grow into something really significant since the beginning and Im really excited for the students but also for people to come see what weve been working on said Shaw.
