Ava Max Releases Her Sophomore Album ‘Diamonds & Dancefloors’

Pop singer Ava Max first burst onto the music scene in 2018 with her breakout single “Sweet But Psycho,” and went on to release her debut album Heaven & Hell in 2020. Today, Max is back with her sophomore full-length Diamonds & Dancefloors, the release of which was preceded by a string of singles throughout 2022 like “Maybe You’re the Problem” and “Weapons.”

Although Ava Max’s dance-pop skills are on full display throughout Diamonds & Dancefloors, the project didn’t exactly come from a cheerful place for Max. The album explores her complex emotions as she deals with the deterioration of a relationship and the eventual breakup — as well as the personal triumph from finding joy in solitude. “This album is about my life and what I went through in the last year and heartbreak,” Max told Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 of the album. “It’s gonna make you cry and dance at the same time.”

To bring the project to life, Max reunited with Cirkut, the prolific pop producer behind her first album. For Max, now that the album is out, the fun really begins. Creating the album was a cathartic process, albeit difficult for her to relive feelings of sadness and regret and record them for all to hear. The album’s release represents a celebration of her hard work and the end of her wallowing in her dejection. “I’m happy it’s not going to be mine anymore,” she told Rolling Stone of her upcoming album release earlier this month. “I’ll be like, ‘Okay, it’s over. All the heartbreak is over. And now, we can just dance.’”
