Supergirl’s finale this month left many lingering questions. Among them is will Melissa Benoist ever play Kara again.
Things could go either way. The series is wrapped with everyone involved basically moving on but the Arrowverse/CWverse is going to continue and grow.
Therefore, the answer isn’t a simple yes or no – although it likely leans more in the direction of never say never.
Branches of Supergirl, from The Flash and Batwoman to Superman & Lois, remain televised and with sufficient life left in them for a few more seasons.
That’s not even counting potential spinoffs and new shows coming down the pike such as Naomi, but the possibility of carrying on the former series’ continuity with Kara still stands.
Benoist could cameo during a crossover in any one or number of the extant programs in the future or become a recurring guest star for a season.
Superman & Lois is the best place for that to happen and, oddly enough, there have been rumors that sound virtually certain we will be gifted either of the outcomes.
However, rumors are exactly that until they are substantiated so fans better not get their hopes up.
Looking into the future, it’s also possible that Benoist becomes a DC legacy player, much like her predecessor as Supergirl Helen Slater, and returns to play Kara when she’s older in a reunion or a brand-new series.
Benoist could even play a new character down the line in either the world of Superman or some other part of the DC Universe as others have done before her and continue to do.
Will Melissa Benoist return as Supergirl?
What it really boils down to is Melissa Benoist’s willingness and she has hinted the door is always open. She may even sense one of those crossovers coming, telling Entertainment Weekly:
“I am not opposed to putting on the suit again, and I know there probably will be opportunities to. It would have to feel right for the character and I know they would probably do it justice. I love playing with [The Flash’s] Grant Gustin. I love Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch on Superman & Lois. So no, I’m not opposed to it.”
There you have it but we shall see what happens, especially with The Flash movie adding a new Supergirl to the mix in 2022 played by Sasha Calle.
And if the Multiverse catches fire and causes different worlds to overlap, we might see Calle and Benoist share the screen together as variants of the Girl of Steel someday.
