She’s set to portray real life drug trafficker Griselda Blanco.
Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara is set to play Colombian drug trafficker Griselda Blanco in a new Netflix crime drama from Narcos showrunner Eric Newman. Given Newman’s involvement and the similar subject matters, it was initially believed to be a spin off of the aforementioned hit show. Now, though, it has been confirmed that it is a standalone project. Andrés Baiz, who worked on Narcos and Narcos: Mexico, has been lined up to direct all episodes of the limited series, and will also serve as executive producer alongside Luis Balaguer, Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard. Ingrid Escajeda Justified will act as showrunner, writer and executive producer. Titled Griselda, the outing is set to explore how the eponymous criminal established one of history’s most profitable cartels back in the 1980s, ferrying illegal substances between Colombia, New York, Miami and California, and earned herself nicknames such as La Madrina, the Black Widow and the Cocaine Godmother.
At the height of her notoriety, Blanco was considered one of the richest and most dangerous women in the world, having become the first-ever billionaire female criminal. She was fatally shot on September 3, 2021, at the age of 69. Griselda Blanco was a larger than life character whose ruthless but ingenious tactics allowed her to rule a billion dollar empire years before many of the most notorious male kingpins we know so much about, Vergara said in a statement via The Wrap. We are thrilled to have found the perfect partners in Eric, Andrés and Netflix to help us bring this story of her life to the screen. Eric Newman has deftly brought to life among the most dynamic characters and stories on screen today. We’re excited to continue on this creative path with him and for this collaboration with Sofia Vergara a force in entertainment and a world beloved talent, Peter Friedlander, vice president of scripted series for Netflix in the U.S. and Canada, added. With an incredible team at the helm, we can’t wait for the world to see how Ingrid Escajeda, Doug Miro and Andrés Baiz take on the twists and turns of Griselda Blancos epic story. Griselda has long been a passion project for Sofia and we are grateful that she and her partners at Latin World Enterainment have chosen us to help her tell that story. Sofia is a brilliant talent and her passion combined with a fantastic story from Doug and Ingrid, and the amazing Andrés Baiz at the directing helm, means we have a very exciting series to share with audiences, Newman concluded. While Vergara is tasked with bringing Blanco to life on the small screen, Hustlers’ Jennifer Lopez will soon be seen playing her in Reed Morano’s long awaited movie The Godmother.
