Ted Lasso Helped Fans Go to Therapy, Says Jason Sudeikis

Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis opens up about the positive impact the show has had, revealing that it’s opened up fans to the idea of therapy.

Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis opens up about the positive impact the show has had on viewers, explaining how it’s opened audiences up to the idea of therapy. Sudeikis plays the title character in the hit Apple TV+ series, which sees the chipper Lasso go from coaching American college football to coaching an English Premier League. In its second season, Ted Lasso devoted a lot of time to peeling back the layers of Lasso’s cheerfulness and optimist to linger on the character’s unsettled issues which bubbled underneath the surface.

The shift began with the introduction of Dr. Sharon Fieldstone (played by Sarah Niles). Though she’s initially introduced with the objective of getting Ted’s team, AFC Richmond, on a winning path, Ted has a few initially frosty encounters with Sharon. Though it takes time, accounting for arguably Ted’s main arc throughout the season, he eventually opens up to Sharon and the two develop a close friendship. It’s a big change for the coach, who stars off Ted Lasso season 2 by brushing off Sharon and being dismissive of her profession.

Speaking at a recent Abbott and Real Madrid event, which took place at the New York Stock Exchange, Sudeikis spoke about how the focus that Ted Lasso season 2 kept on therapy helped fans to warm up to the idea themselves. He revealed that he’s received letters from viewers, as have other cast and crew members, which thanked them for the show’s exploration of mental health. You can read the quote from Sudeikis, via Us Weekly, below.

“I think that we were trying to explore that and personify it in a way and kind of trojan horse that there’s bigger issues in this fun, silly little comedy show. People have really responded to that. And myself and other people in the cast and the writing staff get messages daily from people thanking them for really opening their eyes to what it means to go to therapy and what it means for someone in their own life to go to therapy and just speaking about these things and taking the stigma off of any form of health whether it be nutrition or mental, emotional health. Anything that you can do to help yourself helps those around you.”

Sudeikis’ remarks shed light on a part of why there’s a lot of excitement for Ted Lasso season 3, which is reportedly due to begin production in January 2022. In addition to being funny, and in addition to the tremendous chemistry of its cast, the Apple TV+ series was frank about the flaws of its lead protagonist and his difficultly in accepting help. At times, and in certain episodes, it seemed like the therapy sessions would be of minimal help to Ted or no help at all. It took a massive breakthrough between Sharon and Ted for real progress to be made. And, even then, of course, the situation remains a work in progress.

Still, away from Sudeikis’ head coach, and not counting the other characters that also find outlets for tending to their mental health, Ted Lasso season 2 provides an example for the perils of ignoring personal wellbeing with Nate (Nick Mohammed), who is shown to have unresolved resentments that he refuses to confront in a non-destructive way. It’s good, then, that the show has helped so many fans go down a healthy and important road.
