Eternals star Angelina Jolie discusses her character, Thena, possibly teaming up with Kumail Nanjiani’s Kingo in future Marvel projects.
Angelina Jolie, who portrays Thena in Marvel’s Eternals, talks about her character teaming up with Kumail Nanjiani’s Kingo in a future MCU project. Eternals is the latest movie to join Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, introducing a new team of heroes to the growing film franchise. The Eternals are a group of immortal beings sent to Earth by a Celestial to rid the world of deviants, while they also influence human history over thousands of years. The film is helmed by Chloé Zhao, fresh off her history-making Best Director Oscar win for Nomadland. Aside from Jolie and Nanjiani, Eternals boasts a stellar cast, including Salma Hayek, Richard Madden, Kit Harington, Gemma Chan, and Brian Tyree Henry.
Jolie plays Thena, a skilled warrior who is more than capable with a shield and spear, who also suffers from Mahd Wy’ry. Mahd Wy’ry is a dementia-like illness that affects her memories, often referred to as “Eternal madness” in the Marvel comics. Nanjiani plays Kingo, who can fire cosmic energy from his hands, though his character’s powers from the comics were heavily widdled down in the film. Kingo is also a Bollywood star in Eternals, which is a change from his comic book backstory where he was a Samurai movie star.
The most recent D23 Inside Disney podcast featured Jolie and Nanjiani discussing Eternals. While talking about what fans would like to see from their characters in the future, Jolie mentions that Thena and Kingo would make a great pairing because, as she put it, “We’re kind of perfect opposites.” Nanjiani then chimed in, agreeing with Jolie before mentioning that she brought up this same idea to Marvel Studio President Kevin Feige during the after-party of the Eternals premiere. Check out Jolie and Nanjiani’s comments below:
Jolie: “I think Kingo and Thena haven’t had enough play. We were saying one of us is very physical one of us is very verbal. One of us is very…an extrovert and one of us is a bit of an introvert. We’re kind of perfect opposites.”
Nanjiani: “I think we would make a really good pairing and I’m so glad you said that to Kevin at the after-party for the premiere. You were like what about the two of us?”
Jolie: “Yeah, we’d be so good. We’re pushing.”
As Jolie mentioned, Thena and Kingo could be a fun pairing because of their diverse natures. Due to Thena’s illness, she is a more introverted character, keeping to herself while under the watchful eye of fellow Eternal Gilgamesh. On the other hand, Kingo is much more extroverted, opening himself up to the world through his Bollywood star status, which he revels in, while also being an outspoken member of the Eternals. While both are capable fighters, Kingo’s powers act more like guns, allowing him to fight from a distance if need be, while Thena tends to favor close combat with bladed weapons.
This is also not the first team-up to be suggested for Kingo. Nanjiani previously mentioned Shang-Chi as a possible pairing for Kingo in the future. While nothing is set in stone, it’s also interesting that Jolie went as far as pitching the Kingo/Thena team-up to Feige, which very well could plant the seed of an idea that could grow into a reality down the road. Thena and Kingo’s future in the MCU is currently unknown. However, the ending of Eternals sets the stage for the new cosmic heroes having to deal with the ramifications of their decisions. For those yet to see Eternals, it’s now playing in theaters.
