Some new Marvel stars might dream of their own standalone project, but Eternals’ Angelina Jolie is content with being part of an ensemble.
Angelina Jolie would happily play her Eternals character Thena again, but she has no interest in starring in her own solo movie. Like the rest of Eternals’ star-studded cast, Jolie boarded the MCU in 2019, though it was only this past weekend when she finally made her onscreen debut. Jolie plays Thena, the Eternals’ resident goddess of war. An impressive fighter, Thena also spends the movie grappling with a mental illness known as Mahd Wy’ry, which fractures her memories and makes her a liability at times.
Thena is just one of 10 main characters in Eternals, the MCU’s latest ensemble piece. Oscar winner Chloé Zhao directed the film, which has become one of the most divisive installments in the entire franchise. It’s making a solid showing at the box office with a $166 million worldwide total after just a few days, though it also holds the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score for the MCU. Despite all that, several characters from the movie have become instant fan favorites online, leading many to wonder what’s next for them in the MCU.
For her part, Jolie might not know what’s to come for her Eternals character, but she has her own hopes. In an interview with Brazil’s CinePOP (via Collider), Jolie touched upon the idea of a solo Thena movie. Though some fans might want it, she isn’t one of them. At the same time, Jolie said she would be happy to play Thena again in future Marvel movies. She said:
“I loved being part of the family, so I have no desire to separate from the family. But I would be happy to play her again and explore even more deeply the struggles that she has. I think it’s fun thinking of where they’ve been over the years. We’ve got thousands of years worth of material. We can take her anywhere. I think that’s fun and I like the idea that we can pop up somewhere, maybe in other Marvel movies.”
Marvel has kept quiet about where the new characters are going next, but the Eternals ending left plenty of directions for them to go in. It seems all but certain that audiences will be seeing a lot more of Thena and the rest in the future. Even beyond the possibility of continuing the story that began in Eternals, these characters have a great deal of history that can be explored, as Jolie pointed out. It would be a shame for their arcs to end here.
Of course, there are a lot of characters in Eternals, and any one of them could be an ideal candidate to receive their own solo project. Jolie’s Thena would’ve made a compelling protagonist in a movie of her own, but the actress’ reluctance to make one pretty much shuts the door on that. It’s sweet that she feels the familial bond of the Eternals stretch into real life, and therefore doesn’t want to split with them. One just has to hope that Jolie will be included in future Marvel projects so that she can play this intriguing character again.
