Narcissa Malfoy may be on the wrong side of the story, but she’s the reason that Harry Potter was successful against Voldemort.
It makes sense that Harry Potter would be the hero of the Harry Potter series — it’s in the name. But, of course, he would be nowhere without his friends like Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger and Neville Longbottom. If anything, the film/book series shows that it’s about the team effort, not the individual. But there’s a forgotten savior who really turns the tide of the plot: Narcissa Malfoy.
Narcissa doesn’t get introduced until later in the series, but from the little time spent with her character, fans can see that she knows she’s on the wrong side of history. All of her actions are meant to protect her son, Draco, and Lucius, her husband, despite the fact that her family is under the thumb of Lord Voldemort.
But in the final moments of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Narcissa ultimately saves everyone from the continuing wrath of Voldemort. After Voldemort thinks he’s successfully killed Harry with his killing curse in the Forbidden Forest, he asks Narcissa to double-check for him. She slowly bends over his body, and with evident hope in her heart, she quietly asks him if Draco is still alive. Without giving too much away, Harry carefully and slowly nods, confirming her dearest wish. Because of this, Narcissa lies to Lord Voldemort, telling him that Harry is, in fact, dead.
This is an underrated moment in the Harry Potter series for multiple reasons. Firstly, it shows the true boldness of Narcissa and things she’s willing to risk in the hopes of saving her family. At that moment, when she lies to Voldemort, she’s putting all of her trust and faith in Harry in the hopes that he will vanquish the Dark Lord once and for all. And her lie pays off because had someone else checked to verify his survival, they may have ruined the plan before it came to fruition.
This moment also shows the true strength of the Malfoy family. For the entire story, they have been on the wrong side, but Narcissa is the only one who truly seeks an escape from that life. It’s because of her that Draco and Lucius survive and escape before Voldemort’s final battle with Harry. She literally saves, Harry, her family and potentially everyone else with this one little lie. At the end of the day, her motherly instincts saved them all, and her character should be remembered for being an integral part of the victorious effort.
