Ed Sheeran reveals that he has been asked to write a new song for the upcoming third season of Apple TV+’s hit comedy series, Ted Lasso.
Ed Sheeran is writing a song for Ted Lasso season 3. Apple TV+’s soccer-centric comedy first aired in August 2020 and now, with two successful seasons, has firmly positioned itself at the streamer’s flagship series. Based on the popular NBC Sports promos starring Jason Sudeikis, Ted Lasso centers on its titular American football coach who, in a perplexing move by the team’s owner Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham), is hired to coach a professional football team, AFC Richmond, part of England’s Premier League.
It is soon revealed that Rebecca’s decision was made in an attempt to tank the team in hopes of enacting revenge on the previous owner, her unfaithful ex-husband Rupert (Anthony Head). Despite Rebecca’s attempts at sabotaging the team and AFC Richmond’s eventual relegation to a lower league, she and the players, most notably Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein), Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster), and Sam Obisanya (Toheeb Jimoh), eventually develop a fondness for their new coach due to his incomparable charm and optimism about the human condition.
Now, during an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show (via Collider) promoting his first studio album in four years, singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran confirmed some intriguing news about the upcoming third season of Ted Lasso. Appearing on the show virtually due to his recent COVID-19 diagnosis, Sheeran admitted he was “obsessed with” Ted Lasso, much to the delight of Hannah Waddingham who was in studio, and revealed that he has been asked to write a song for the third season. Read what Sheeran had to say below:
[Ted Lasso is] one of these shows where I’m constantly recommending it to people, and they’re watching it instantly…I think it’s great. I got asked to do the song for the next season. No, I am. You don’t have to convince me.
Though Sheeran didn’t offer any more details on whom he was contacted by or what type of scene the song would score, he seems to have already made up his mind. This will also likely raise suspicions about a potential guest appearance from Sheeran, who famously (and controversially) cameoed in an episode of Game of Thrones, another hit series that coincidentally starred Waddingham.
Due to the Game of Thrones backlash, Sheeran has vowed to be “more careful” when choosing cameos in the future. Though he likely won’t be appearing on screen to play his tune like in the HBO show, Sheeran’s song should be a welcome addition to Ted Lasso, which already features a theme and score from another prominent musician, Mumford & Sons frontman Marcus Mumford. With season 3 of Ted Lasso currently in development and set to film in January of next year, hopefully Sheeran reveals more details about the new song very soon.
