Angelina Jolie shows her mastery of the world of Marvel secrecy with a response to a question regarding the future of her Eternals character. Jolie stars in the next chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thena, an elite warrior who can form any weapon out of cosmic energy. The ensemble cast for Eternals includes the Oscar-winning actress alongside Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Lia McHugh, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Harish Patel, Kit Harrington and Salma Hayek.
Eternals is set sometime after the events of Avengers: Endgame and centers on the titular group of immortals, created by the Celestials, who have lived on Earth for over 7,000 years as they are brought back together to protect humanity from their evil counterparts, the Deviants. Development on the film was first announced in early 2018 when Ryan and Kaz Firpo were attached to pen the script for the project, while Oscar winner Chloé Zhao was brought on later that year to direct and rewrite the screenplay with Patrick Burleigh. Having wrapped production in early 2020, Eternals saw multiple release delays due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but is now gearing up to hit theaters exclusively in November thanks to the box office success of fellow MCU title Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Jolie recently spoke with Total Film (via ComicBook.com) to discuss the upcoming release of Eternals. When posed with the question regarding her future in the franchise, the Oscar winner kept her lips sealed but offered a cheeky response showing her mastery in keeping Marvel’s secrets. See what Jolie had to say below:
“I don’t think I can say that. Good try, though.”
For the past decade, the comic book genre has seen many actors sign contracts entailing multiple films and appearances in other franchise installments, though Marvel Studios has shown in the past few years to be mostly moving away from such a business model. Stars including WandaVision’s Elizabeth Olsen have revealed how their contracts originally encompassed two films in the MCU, though she would later extend her time with the studio to four released films, leading the Disney+ series and returning for next year’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Given these contracts are becoming less of the go-to for Marvel Studios, it would make sense Jolie would keep her franchise future a secret for the time being.
Additionally, with Eternals still over a month away from release, there’s always the possibility her character doesn’t make it to the end, putting a hitch in her future with the franchise. Although, if to look at Paul Bettany’s Vision and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, it’s also pretty evident dead doesn’t always mean the end for an actor in the MCU. Only time will tell what the future may hold for Jolie in the MCU when Eternals hits theaters on November 5.
