Harry Potter: Philosopher’s Stone’s Sirius Black Reference – What Was Planned

The first chapter in the Harry Potter book series included a casual reference to Sirius Black, showing how much J.K. Rowling had already planned.

Sirius Black was one of the most important people in Harry Potter’s life, and he was name-dropped in the first book – so how much did J.K. Rowling had planned when Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was published? Rowling introduced readers to the Wizarding World in 1997, and continued exploring it with six more novels that followed the story of “the boy who lived” and the darkest wizard of all, Lord Voldemort.

Harry Potter didn’t have an easy life: following the murder of his parents when he was one year old, he was sent to live with his aunt and uncle, who were never nice to him. Harry then learned he was a wizard (as were his parents), and began to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he also encountered a lot of obstacles and enemies. Harry eventually formed his own family thanks to his friends, but before that, readers witnessed another big loss in Harry’s life when his godfather and guardian, Sirius Black, was killed in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Sirius Black became a very important person for Harry and one of the most beloved characters in the series, and Rowling knew exactly where she was going with him, so much that he was casually mentioned in the first book.

Harry Potter: Philosopher’s Stone’s Sirius Black Reference Shows How Much Rowling Had Planned

In the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Hagrid briefly mentions Sirius Black when he’s asked where he got the motorbike he arrived in. Sirius found the Potters’ house destroyed and his friends dead, as well as baby Harry alive. Hagrid later appeared to take Harry, but not before Sirius offered to take him as he was the chosen guardian in case something happened to Lily and James, but Hagrid told him Dumbledore had already arranged for Harry to stay with Lily’s sister. Sirius finally agreed, and lent Hagrid his flying motorbike to take Harry to the Dursleys’ house. After that, he went after Peter Pettigrew and confronted him on a city street, causing an explosion that killed various muggles. As a result, he was sent to Azkaban.

Sirius made his first proper appearance in the third book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and his name being mentioned in the first book shows how much of the overall story Rowling already had planned. She has said many times that she’s all about building the plot for her stories, and before she finished the first book, she had already plotted the following novels (she even had the final chapter of the seventh book written), so she knew how important Sirius Black was going to be. The Harry Potter series is written in a way that encourages re-reading, so the audience can catch all those little details and bits of foreshadowing and better piece everything together, as many of these (such as that Sirius Black reference) will surely go unnoticed the first time they read the books.
