Was Nina Dobrev’s Split From Ian Somerhalder To Blame For ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Ending?

Many believed that Dobrev struggled to work with the man she spent three years of her life with (romantically).

Just one year after officially kicking off the premiere of Vampire Diaries in 2009 had co-stars Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder started seeing one another. While Dobrev has always been adamant not to mix business with her personal life, she later admitted that during this one particular time, she simply couldn’t help the fact that she had some pretty strong feelings for Somerhalder.

On the show, Dobrev was in an on-screen relationship with Somerhalder’s on-screen brother Stefan Salvatore — played by Paul Wesley — making Dobrev’s romance with her ex-beau all the more confusing for fans to comprehend. But one thing was for sure, the former Degrassi star was head over heels in love and seemed hopeful that their pairing would last.

Three years after their romance was made public news, the couple decided to split, but to make matters worse, they continued working together on Vampire Diaries — up until Dobrev decided to quit the show in 2015, leaving fans utterly stunned.

Many believed that Dobrev struggled to work with the man she spent three years of her life with (romantically), especially since Somerhalder had already moved on with Nikki Reed, whom he went on to marry the same year Dobrev left TVD. So, was the romance ending the real reason why the show came to an end soon after the Canadian’s departure? Here’s the lowdown…

Nina Dobrev Says Goodbye
After six incredible seasons playing Elena Gilbert on The Vampire Diaries, Dobrev announced that she would be leaving the show back in 2015.

The news came as a surprise to fans considering the CW had already shared that TVD was set to return for another series the following year, leading many to wonder whether Dobrev’s decision to walk away could mean the next season will also be canceled.

Well, luckily, it wasn’t. It just meant that Dobrev wouldn’t be part of the final two seasons that followed before the show concluded its eighth and final run.

In a lengthy Instagram post, the actress explained, “I always knew I wanted Elena’s story to be a six-season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime. I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger.

“I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead, and there’s still so much more to come before the season finale in May. Elena fell in love not once, but twice, with two epic soulmates, and I myself made some of the best friends I’ll ever know and built an extended family I will love forever.”

Popular gossip blog Celeb Dirty Laundry heavily insinuated back in 2015 that Somerhalder was “relieved” that Dobrev was gone because it had allowed him to take over the spotlight now that the lead character had left the show.

The same outlet also alleged that Somerhalder’s relationship with Reed had supposedly made things awkward on set. After all, Dobrev was in a three-year romance with her co-star, so to see him every day and know that he has moved on with a new woman wouldn’t have been easy for anyone.

And while Dobrev claims she always knew that her departure from the show would come after six seasons, one can’t help but think that having to see her ex-boyfriend every day probably didn’t make the phase of getting over a former flame any easier.

Since leaving the CW series in 2015, Dobrev has had moderate success at the box office, having starred in movies such as xXx: Return of Xander Cage, Flatliners, and a recurring role in the 2019 TV series Fam.

In 2018, she also reunited with her former Degrassi co-star Drake, who requested her to star in the music video for his single “I’m Upset.”

“It was so fun to be home,” Dobrev told ET Canada of her time filming Drake’s video. “It was so nice to go back to the city, and I mean he’s turned the city into such a hotspot for the world […] And getting to go back home on our old stomping grounds and roam the halls together after so many years was really special and really cool.”

The proposal was made via email, to which she continued, “It was a no-brainer, of course. We, I think everybody was stoked to get back together and see everyone.”
