Ellen Pompeo Recalls Her Husband’s Reaction To Her Kissing Scenes On Grey’s Anatomy

Ellen Pompeo’s husband wasn’t a huge fan of her multiple kissing scenes with Patrick Dempsey throughout their time together on Grey’s Anatomy. The ABC hospital drama is headed into its 18th season ABC and, since its beginning, the long-running show has had Pompeo’s Meredith Grey at its center. While Meredith’s relationship with Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd tragically ended in season 11 with his untimely death, their romance continues to be a major part of her story.

Meredith’s relationship with McDreamy was central to Grey’s Anatomy and its early seasons especially. Their long courtship, eventual marriage, and journey into parenthood let viewers get a look at their strengths and their flaws both in and out of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Although Derek died in a car accident prior to his third child’s birth, the pair reunited in the most recent season on Meredith’s imaginary beach. It was the reunion that many fans were waiting years for.

Someone who may not have been anticipating this reunion is Pompeo’s real life husband, Chris Ivery. Meredith and Derek’s chemistry on Grey’s Anatomy was undeniable and, according to a recent interview with InStyle, Pompeo’s husband was uncomfortable with his wife’s intense on-screen romance. Pompeo said that Ivery used to get particularly jealous during their steamy kissing scenes. Pompeo said:

Dempsey obviously put the Dreamy in McDreamy, so it’s no shocker Ivery wasn’t happy with his wife being involved in multiple seasons of fictional romance. It couldn’t have been easy to watch his wife say, “Pick me. Choose me. Love me,” to such a heartthrob. While Meredith has had multiple flings with different characters in Grey’s Anatomy over the years, she and Derek clearly had the deepest love especially considering that he’s the father of her fictional kids. They also have a lot of shared trauma — from hospital shoots, plane crashes, and more.

One thing Pompeo didn’t mention was her husband’s reaction to Dempsey’s surprise guest return in season 17 of Grey’s Anatomy. Meredith spent many of the episodes in the latest season battling the COVID-19 pandemic and catching up with lost loved ones on a fictional beach. Considering her reunions with several characters from her past, it seemed as though Meredith might be making an exit after all these years. However, Pompeo signed a contract to return to season 18, meaning that her Grey’s Anatomy days are far from over. This is likely fueling the show’s continued success, as it’s hard to imagine Grey’s Anatomy without Meredith’s fearless attitude and expert medical skills at its center.
