Legacies EP Brett Matthews explained that past cast members from The Vampire Diaries and The Originals are always welcome to appear on the show.
Just like previous seasons of Legacies, the third season of The CW drama could feature the appearance of other characters from The Vampire Diaries Universe.
“We have a very open door policy when it comes to that. If any of the actors from our past ever called us and we had the right story, we’d do it in a second,” executive producer Brett Matthews told TVInsider. “There’s always a chance, and if any did, I wouldn’t want to spoil those things. If anybody’s dying to come back and dip a toe back into this universe, just tell them to call me.”
Legacies is the third series in The Vampire Diaries Universe. The first, The Vampire Diaries, ran for eight seasons on The CW from 2009 to 2017 and introduced fans to the smoldering vampire brothers Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev). The second, The Originals, followed Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan), who made his debut on The Vampire Diaries Season 3, and his family. That drama ran ran for five seasons from 2013 to 2018.
Legacies features many characters who originally appeared in either The Vampire Diaries or The Originals, including Hope Mikaelson, Landon Kirby, Josie Saltzman, Lizzie Saltzman, Matt Donovan, Jeremy Gilbert, Freya Mikaelson and Kai Parker.
The connections between the shows go beyond characters and cast members. Matthews recently teased that Season 3’s upcoming musical episode will serve as a love letter to the entire franchise.
“We were sending pictures to cast members from the old shows and seeing their reactions,” he shared. “It really was a beautiful walk down memory lane. This show would literally not exist without the other shows. It was fun to explore that connection onscreen.
