Big Bang Theory’s Mayim Bialik admits ‘feeling like an outsider’ before and after CBS role

THE BIG BANG THEORY’S Mayim Bialik was a fan-favourite during her time on the CBS sitcom as Amy Farrah Fowler. However, the star has recently revealed her prior struggles with fame and feeling like an outsider.

Mayim Bialik’s character Amy shocked and delighted fans when she entered into an unconventional relationship with protagonist Sheldon Cooper (played by Jim Parsons). Though, the Big Bang Theory star has now revealed that her role in the popular CBS series, which catapulted her to worldwide stardom and her time as a child star has made it harder to live a relatively normal life.

First debuting in 2007, American sitcom The Big Bang Theory remains one of the most popular comedy series of all time.

However, Amy Farrah Fowler star Bialik has detailed her struggles with fame, especially since joining the series.

Bialik told Yahoo Entertainment: “Being on television definitely made me feel like more of an outsider.

“Being in the public eye is definitely abnormal,” the actress continued.

Bialik also stated that her time as a child star on the sitcom Blossom in the ‘90s had already made her feel different.

The actress said that growing up, she never felt normal but doesn’t specifically put that down to working on Blossom.

She explained that she comes from “a really unusual” family, so that made her feel different from other families.

“Nothing felt normal for me,” Bialik notes about her time with her family.
However, the actress stated that her family did everything they could to give her a normal childhood and she was still treated “like a normal kid”.

Bialik says that, while she didn’t feel it, there was a lot about her childhood that was normal, like doing the choirs, going to school, or “getting picked on by my brother”.

In the discussion about landing the dream role on The Big Bang Theory, Bialik revealed that she auditioned out of necessity.
The star stated how the role came to her, saying: “I’m sure all of you up North [of the USA] will understand that I was running out of health insurance.

“Because that’s not considered a human right in the country,” she added.

“I mean, I had a toddler and a newborn and I had been a grad student and my insurance was expiring.

“This is a true story.”
The actress continued by explaining why she needed acting work so badly: “And I figured if I can just get even a couple jobs like here or there, I’ll be able to get insurance again.”

Bialik explained that she never expected to get the role in the first place, and she definitely didn’t expect to be a regular cast member.

At the time, Bialik was teaching Hebrew and piano, as well as teaching Neuroscience.

The actress earned a PhD in neuroscience in 2007 from UCLA.

Bialik commented on her eventual casting, saying: “It changed my life and I got insurance!”
