During a recent interview, Supergirl Season 6 showrunners state there are no plans yet for Mon-El returning in the final season of the CW series.
When asked if Mon-El would be returning in Supergirl Season 6, the series’ showrunners have stated there are no plans of yet. Ever since Mon-El left the show during season 3, fans have been curious about his next appearance. With Season 6 being the final run of the series, there is more hope than ever that Mon-El will be back, especially since he is arguably the most suitable love interest Kara has had in the series to date.
Mon-El first appeared as a refugee from the planet Daxam in Supergirl season 2, slowly forming a relationship with Kara over time as he discovered his own abilities as his planet neighbored Krypton. Soon enough, Earth is visited by Mon-El’s relations, who do not like the influence Kara is having on him, but do see potential in using Earth as their new home, Daxam having been badly damaged by Krypton’s destruction. The season ended with Lena Luthor seeding Earth’s atmosphere with a substance that would poison Daxamites, thus preventing their invasion, but forcing Mon-El to leave Earth, and Kara behind. While he eventually returned in Season 3, it was clear that Mon-El was not staying as the permanent love-interest on the show, especially when they revealed he was a founding member of the Legion of Superheroes in the future.
Now, with Supergirl coming to a close in the 6th season, fans are hopeful to see Mon-El return in a meaningful way, especially as they look toward where Kara’s story will conclude. The showrunners are already teasing the return of characters from the past for the final season, and it would only make sense to include Mon-El. According to showrunner Jessica Queller during a recent interview with TV Line:
“We absolutely have plans for familiar faces to hopefully appear in the season finale. We’re hoping that works out and we’ll have a very emotional full circle with some of our own favorites.”
Strangely though, that same interview with Queller and fellow showrunner, Robert Rovner, has them singing a different tune about Mon-El. According to Rovner, they haven’t even thought about Mon-El making a return to the show. Rover specifically says:
At this point, we don’t have plans for Mon-El to return, but if it takes us there…We love Chris. He’s a part of the Supergirl family, but at the moment, we don’t have plans for him to return.
Starting this week, Supergirl will air its first 6 episodes and will not be airing the rest of the episodes of the season till this summer. So there is a chance that at the time of the interview the showrunners have simply not finished the season yet and are still planning what characters will return. But with Rovner making statements like, “The stakes are very high in the season opener, and they get higher by the end of it,” it certainly feels like they have most of the season planned out already.
Could Mon-El’s return be central to Supergirl’s end game? What if the showrunners intend to have Kara end up with Mon-El, but are saving it for the end of season 6? More importantly, what if the in-universe reason for Kara to disappear is that she leaves with Mon-El and heads into the future and joins the Legion of Superheroes? It would make sense as she’d leave knowing there are a number of heroes on Earth who can take her place. And what better way to leave the door open for Kara to appear later in the Arrowverse than to have her jump into the future with the Legion, who can travel back in time whenever direct intervention was required? Of course, they could also legitimately have not planned anything with Mon-El, as stated, and have a completely different plan for the end of Kara’s story. But it would have to be pretty good to make them forget about Mon-El and the potential he brings for the Supergirl’s conclusion
