Harry Potter and the Cursed Child May Not Reopen Until 2022

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is among a handful of productions that won’t return to Broadway until 2022, despite theaters reopening in September.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is among the productions that don’t plan on reopening when Broadway opens its doors in September.

The two-part play is among a handful of shows not expected to return until 2022, according to The New York Times. The team behind the New York production of Cursed Child is reportedly rethinking the play’s length and structure before deciding how and when to reopen.

Set 19 years after the epilogue of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Cursed Child follows Harry Potter, now the Head of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic, and his son Albus, who is a new student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The play was written by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany and is considered the official eighth story in the Harry Potter saga.

Since beginning previews in June 2016, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has become the most awarded play in theatre history. It’s won 25 major US awards, with six Tony Awards including Best Play. It also won 24 major UK theatre awards and is the most awarded show in the history of Britain’s Olivier Awards, winning a record-breaking nine awards.

While the play is a while off from reopening stateside, Broadway World confirmed last week that the Melbourne production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child recently extended its run and is currently offering bookings through December. Meanwhile, the West End production of Cursed Child isn’t expected to return to the stage in London until October 14 at the earliest.

Despite the fact that Rowling has previously stated that her journey with Harry is done, WarnerMedia teased in early March that the company has several Potter-adjacent projects in the works.

“There’s this little thing called Harry Potter, which is one of the most beloved franchises,” WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar said at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecommunications Conference. “And we’re incredibly thankful to be able to partner with J.K. Rowling and so I would argue there’s a lot of fun and potential there as well.”

Kilar didn’t clarify whether the new project would be for film or television, fueling rumors that Cursed Child could be adapted in some way. The conversations around Cursed Child, specifically, have continued despite Rowling tweeting in 2017, “I know a lot of people are looking for reasons to be cheerful today, but there is NO TRUTH to the rumour about a #CursedChild movie trilogy!”

While the future of Cursed Child in New York City is somewhat up in the air, at least four new Broadway musicals are on track to open this fall. This includes Six, the concert-style British pop show about the unlucky wives of King Henry VIII, as well as Mrs. Doubtfire, Diana and Flying Over Sunset. A fifth new musical about Michael Jackson, titled MJ, plans to start performances in late 2021.
